Introducing the Predispatch Optimiser

Asset Optimisation

In the NEM, parallel to the green transition, runs the automation transition.

nem-batteries

Batteries appear to be flooding the electricity market, from new entrants and incumbents. But how does a spot trader maximise profit, when there is a need to integrate a battery with the rest of the portfolio.

The predispatch optimiser

To explore how traders optimise a single thermal generator (maximise profit) in the NEM, we created this free online application.

Features:

  • Perfect foresight of electricity prices (no probabilistic modelling, yet)
  • Single thermal unit portfolio (pick any DUID)
  • Uncontracted (entirely merchant)
  • Energy only market
  • Heat rate sensitivities (ie. relationship between load and efficiency)
  • Half-hourly dispatch
  • Half-hourly revenue (ie. if generator is ramping, the output MW achieved for the beginning of the half-hour will feed into revenue calculation).
  • Coming Soon: Price sensitivities (ie. a generator will suppress the price when supplying capacity)

User-defined parameters:

  • Ramp rate up/down, minimum and maximum capacity constraints
  • Fuel price ($/GJ)
  • Operating and maintenance costs ($/MWh)
  • Start Costs ($/start)

You may have to refresh your browser to get the prices to update.

Coming Soon: Batteries and renewables.

Once you want to run the optimiser, hit the blue “Optimiser” button.

You can also key in any unit output, to see how that impacts profit, and fuel burn.
